Course Description
This 8-hour course equips participants with the knowledge and skills to take defensive actions during hazardous material spills. Designed for employees tasked with chemical spill recognition and mitigation from a safe distance, this training ensures compliance with OSHA’s HAZWOPER regulations and prepares participants to respond effectively to emergency situations.
- Recognize laws and regulations protecting emergency responders
- Identify hazardous materials, their categories, and associated risks
- Understand the APIE process (Analyze, Plan, Implement, Evaluate) for managing hazardous material incidents
- Learn chemical and physical properties, routes of exposure, and toxic effects of hazardous materials
- Identify hazards related to criminal or terrorist activity and potential target locations
- Understand the purpose of medical surveillance in hazardous material response
- Identify hazardous materials using container shapes, sizes, and marking systems (e.g., NFPA 704M, DOT, HMIS)
- Use the Emergency Response Guidebook to identify and assess hazardous materials
- Use shipping papers, facility documents, and the NIOSH Pocket Guide to identify hazardous materials
- Develop defensive strategies to mitigate spills while maintaining a safe distance
