Cadmium Training
Course Program
Course Description
This course provides essential training on cadmium safety, focusing on hazard recognition, exposure prevention, and compliance with OSHA regulations. Participants will learn to implement engineering controls, use PPE effectively, and respond to cadmium-related emergencies to protect workers from toxic exposure.
- Understand cadmium’s properties, uses, and common exposure sources
- Learn how cadmium exposure occurs through inhalation, ingestion, and contaminated surfaces
- Recognize acute and long-term health risks, including kidney dysfunction, lung cancer, and metal fume fever
- Understand cadmium’s classification as a human carcinogen and teratogen
- Review OSHA’s Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) and Short-Term Exposure Limit (STEL)
- Understand requirements under OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.1027, including training, monitoring, and medical surveillance
- Implement engineering controls like local exhaust ventilation and enclosed processes
- Enforce hygiene practices, including prohibiting eating, drinking, or smoking in cadmium work areas
- Use wet cleaning or HEPA vacuuming to minimize dust dispersal
- Select, inspect, and maintain appropriate PPE, including respirators, gloves, goggles, and lab coats
- Learn proper storage and cleaning of PPE in designated cadmium areas
- Understand the importance of periodic medical exams to detect early effects of cadmium exposure
- Ensure confidentiality and access to medical records for employees
- Provide initial and annual training on cadmium hazards, controls, and emergency procedures
- Respond effectively to cadmium exposure incidents, including inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact
- Administer first aid, such as flushing eyes/skin with water and moving to fresh air
- Recognize delayed symptoms like pulmonary edema and report exposures promptly
Certifications Obtained Upon Completion
Certificate of Completion in Cadmium Safety Training
