Cold Weather Safety
Course Program
Course Description
This course provides essential training for workers exposed to cold environments, teaching them how to prevent cold stress, recognize cold-related injuries, and stay safe and productive in extreme weather conditions. Participants will gain practical knowledge to reduce risks and maintain performance in cold weather.
- Explains how cold temperatures, wind speed, moisture, and prolonged exposure to unheated or poorly insulated environments contribute to cold stress and dangerous body heat loss.
- Covers the primary methods of body heat loss including conduction, convection, radiation, and evaporation and how environmental conditions affect personal safety in cold weather operations.
- Reviews common cold weather injuries and illnesses including frostbite, hypothermia, snow blindness, and dehydration while explaining methods for recognition, prevention, and early response.
- Explains practical cold injury prevention strategies including maintaining body warmth, proper hydration, nutrition, and safe work practices designed to reduce cold-related health risks.
- Covers the selection, layering, and use of cold weather clothing systems, protective gear, and shelters used to improve insulation and protect personnel in extreme environmental conditions.
- Focuses on cold weather survival skills including preparing survival kits, conserving energy, maintaining operational performance, and implementing safe sleep practices in cold environments.
