Course Description

This course provides comprehensive training on responding to chemical spills along coastal shorelines, focusing on protecting ecosystems, wildlife, and communities. Participants will learn critical response strategies, cleanup techniques, and tools to mitigate the environmental and economic impacts of shoreline spills.

  • Explains the environmental, economic, and operational impacts of shoreline chemical spills, including long-term damage to coastal ecosystems, wildlife, tourism, and local communities.
  • Covers emergency spill reporting procedures including rapid notification requirements, National Response Center (NRC) coordination, and the role of EPA reporting standards in initiating response operations.
  • Reviews the 5 C’s of spill response including controlling the source, containing the spill, performing cleanup operations, coordinating communication efforts, and evaluating response effectiveness for future improvements.
  • Explains the Shoreline Cleanup Assessment Technique (SCAT) process, including shoreline surveys, environmental sensitivity evaluations, habitat prioritization, and cleanup planning strategies.
  • Covers shoreline cleanup operations including bulk oil removal, contaminated material recovery, shoreline restoration techniques, and cleanup approaches tailored to environmentally sensitive coastal areas.
  • Focuses on responder safety practices including personal protective equipment (PPE), spill response training, hazard awareness, and procedures for protecting emergency personnel during shoreline cleanup operations.
  • Reviews wildlife protection and rehabilitation efforts associated with shoreline spill incidents, including coordination with environmental specialists and wildlife recovery organizations.
  • Explains the use of scientific tools, predictive spill modeling, environmental impact analysis, and Natural Resource Damage Assessments (NRDA) to support shoreline restoration and long-term ecosystem recovery.
