Chromium
Course Program
Course Description
This course provides essential training on the hazards of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) exposure, focusing on health risks, regulatory compliance, and protective measures. Participants will learn to implement engineering controls, use PPE effectively, and respond to exposure incidents to ensure workplace safety and compliance with OSHA standards.
- Understand what Cr(VI) is and its presence in industrial processes like welding, plating, and chromate use
- Recognize how Cr(VI) becomes airborne as dust, fumes, or mists
- Learn the health effects, including lung, nasal, and sinus cancers, asthma, skin ulcers, and organ damage
- Understand OSHA’s classification of Cr(VI) as a known human carcinogen
- Review OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1026, including PEL (5 µg/m³) and Action Level (2.5 µg/m³) requirements
- Understand employer responsibilities for regulated areas, PPE, and medical surveillance
- Identify common exposure routes, including inhalation, skin contact, and ingestion
- Implement engineering controls like ventilation and process enclosures
- Follow hygiene practices, such as proper decontamination and restricted eating/drinking in exposure areas
- Select and use appropriate PPE, including HEPA-filter respirators, gloves, and protective clothing
- Learn proper storage, cleaning, and maintenance of PPE
- Conduct air and surface sampling to monitor chromium levels and contamination
- Understand the importance of regular medical exams and recordkeeping to detect early health effects
- Respond effectively to exposure incidents with immediate medical evaluation and decontamination
- Report and investigate incidents to prevent recurrence
- Safely remove and dispose of chromium-contaminated materials following OSHA and EPA guidelines
- Monitor ground and water contamination at affected sites
- Train cleanup crews on hazards and protective protocols
Certifications Obtained Upon Completion
