Course Program
Course Description
This course provides comprehensive training for employees who ship hazardous materials via ground transportation, ensuring compliance with DOT regulations. Participants will gain the knowledge and skills needed to identify, package, label, document, and transport hazardous materials safely and in accordance with federal requirements.
Understand the purpose and scope of DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR) and their applicability to ground transportation
Learn the fundamentals of hazardous material identification, including:
Definitions of hazardous materials, substances, wastes, marine pollutants, and elevated temperature materials
Determining hazard class, packing group, and proper shipping name using the Hazardous Materials Table (HMT)
Explore packaging requirements, including:
Selecting appropriate specification packaging and understanding UN packaging codes
Marking, labeling, and maintaining packaging to meet regulatory standards
Master the preparation of shipping papers, including:
Proper documentation of UN numbers, hazard classes, packing groups, and emergency response information
Shipper and receiver responsibilities, certification, and retention requirements
Understand placarding requirements, including:
General placarding rules, prohibited and permissive placarding, and visibility standards
Learn best practices for segregation and load securement to ensure safe transport of hazardous materials
Gain knowledge of special handling requirements for unique situations, such as:
Small quantities, overpacks, salvage packagings, limited quantities, and materials of trade
Develop skills in safety and emergency response, including:
Using the Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG) and following notification procedures during incidents
Complete a knowledge test to demonstrate understanding of DOT HAZMAT regulations and compliance requirements
