Course Description

This course provides foundational knowledge of structural firefighting, focusing on the risks of building collapse, fire dynamics, and situational awareness. Participants will learn modern tactics, stress management, and safety strategies to reduce risks and improve firefighter survival during structural fire incidents.

  • Understand the dangers of structural fires, including lightweight construction collapse risks
  • Analyze case studies, such as the St. Louis FD May 3, 2002 incident, to identify lessons learned
  • Learn the science of collapse, including NIST and UL research on lightweight construction failures
  • Develop situational awareness skills to counteract tunnel vision, cognitive overload, and stress responses
  • Recognize protected vs. unprotected construction and identify structural hazards through pre-incident planning
  • Master Mayday prevention techniques, including PASS device activation, exit strategies, and team continuity
  • Explore evidence-based firefighting tactics for modern fuel loads and construction types
  • Understand the importance of continuous size-up, communication with Incident Command, and monitoring fire conditions

Certifications Obtained Upon Completion
