Course Description
This course provides comprehensive training for individuals designated as the Competent Person for excavation and trenching operations. Participants will learn to identify and mitigate hazards, ensure compliance with OSHA standards, and implement protective systems to maintain a safe work environment.
- Understand key terms and definitions in OSHA excavation standards
- Learn OSHA requirements for a Competent Person in excavation work
- Identify general hazards associated with trenching and excavation
- Understand requirements for locating and working near underground utilities (federal and state)
- Recognize dangers associated with water accumulation in excavations
- Learn safe access and egress methods for trenches and excavations
- Address risks from vehicular traffic near excavation sites
- Identify and mitigate potential atmospheric hazards in excavation work
- Conduct soil testing and classification to determine stability
- Implement protective systems, including:
- Sloping and benching
- Shoring
- Trench boxes
- Conduct Competent Person inspections to ensure site safety
- Understand OSHA directives, interpretations, and inspection protocols for excavation sites
